Spaceship for the Sensapolis Science and Entertainment Center for Children

While working for differentfutures we got the chance to design, plan and built an exhibition pavilion in the shape of a space ship. On the 800 m² interior exhibition space installations, science, fun and games around the topic of space exploration are displayed. Due to the close time-frame of the project, all surfaces of the hull where CNC milled, while the rest is built with "standard" construction techniques.

Traversing the Edge - New Museum for Contemporary Art Istanbul

Perspective

Motion is an index for a change of condition - It is one of the basic stimuli that attracts human perception immediately. The design concept of the museum hybrid focuses on this idea, by exploring the perceptive relationship between a patterned/ornamented façade and a fluidly changing building mass creating oscillating visual effects of depth and implied motion. The idea of motion is also seen as an index for Turkeys changing social and political situation and Istanbul’s unique role as the linking hub between Europe and Asia, where ideas from both continents have converged for centuries.

Siteplan

Istanbul, from an urban perspective, grows exuberantly along it´s steep slopes facing the Marmara Sea and the Golden Horn, while the inland sides are often neglected, forming underdeveloped pockets. By placing a cultural building on an inland slope off Taksim square, the project tries to initiate urban renewal, densification and gentrification away from the waterside. Through this Istanbul could grow to its inside, instead of further expanding along the sea.

Perspectives

The diversified topology around the site supports this idea by generating a multitude of vistas, that strongly vary in height and angle, changing the perception of the building from multiple points in the city.

Circulation

The museum is seen as an urban connector and destination point, where art should be able to flow out of the building and the city should be able to flow inside. Through an all-time open atrium
where visitors are welcomed to engage in artistic discourse, attend music, cinematic and arts festivals, or maybe just hang out on their way elsewhere, the museum becomes a hybrid space where different kinds of people can meet and unexpected events can occur.

Organizationally the museum tries to create a mixture between a fluid open space concept that uses specifically shaped, unique volumes for the permanent collection and more versatile spaces for the temporary exhibitions.

Section

By combining the museum with an office tower the project is futher connected to the social context of hotels and offices surrounding the site, generating sufficient funding for the museum.

The design of the Tesla Motors Car Design Center focuses on the
on the synergetic combination of design and eco-technologie.
By focusing on the creation of surface highlights as a design strategy, the project relates itself to product design, which uses controlled highlights to create recognisability.

For this the design explores possibilities of car industrie analysis tools and aerodynamic principles, futher relating the building to the clients approach of an synergetic combination of design and eco-technologie.

Wroclaw is a City with an cultural and architectural heritage looking for the bilbao effect. By generating a 300 m long structure the building becomes a landmark, that can be recognized from any airplane crossing the cities vicinity. Embedded in the cities cultural belt, the meander volume of the building enhances the rhythmical change between building, plaza and park in wroclaw, connecting the opera, castle and stock exchange through

an new cultural landscape on wroclaw´s inner-city boundary.

The projects explores the possibilities of parametrically controlled components for an new kind of structural ornament for panelising a building envelope. The changing façade elements are a device to negoiate between the functions of the building and the surrounding city.

The use of ruled shearing surfaces articulates the Concert hall shapes, building skin and circulation allowing for a fluid interaction of skin, circulation and embedded concerthall volumes. A discret panelisation logic subdivides the building envelope creating closure and apparture at the same time.

Organization
The building consists of three organizing elements,
the envelope, the concert halls and an nesting volume that follows the surface logic of the envelope and takes up the sideprogramm, while blending between volume and walk able surface.

Parametic Skin Panalisation

Through altering the parametric input facade panel size, orientation and ratio can be adjusted in order to fit the specific needs at the given situation.

Synopsis
The main aim of the gradient scale project was to experiment and to scrutinize the concept of scale in  architecture. In general the concept of scale is considered to be a very rigid idea, following rules that seem to be  unbendable. To understand plans or models, architects and contractors are bounded to a formula, or  etiquette of communication, the scale. The gradient scale project background is a thesis, which formulates  the idea of non-sequential scalar growth. The entire project is an experimental digital scape, produced as  a presentation platform for the projects of SPAN (Matias del Campo & Sandra Manninger) at the  AustriArchitecture exhibition in the Zumtobel Lightforum in Vienna, Austria.

To achieve the conceptual idea of a continuously growing scalar model an MEL algorithm was developed  which repeated a series of 5 curves along the predefined length of the exhibition object. These curves were connected in Maya, creating a Birail 3plus surface. By creating several iterations of  forces influencing the surface, different degrees of articulations of the final element were created which  leaded to the resulting object. The entire object can be seen as an experimental playground for scaleless architecture. The consequence being a deformation field for projects. Take for example the idea of placing a long project  on the gradient scale.

Production   
The main theoretical background, and the digital fabrication means applied in this project are interlocked with  each other. Certain Issues connected to digital production methods were explored using a 3axis-milling  machine. The Software Surfcam, which is used to calculate the NC files for the milling machine gives the  architect a powerful tool to examine different surface patterns which emerge from the isoparms created in the MAYA model. By consciously manipulating the isoparms direction the final, milled result can be severely  formed, as well as by choosing different mill bits and variating the stepsizes of the milling path.  There is a wide range of possible applications in architecture for pattering. The jagging and rippling of the  surface can be used to create reinforcement ribs in the panel’s structure, the objects surface can get a  defined direction.

Jagging can be used as a basis for geometrically consistent apertures. The rippling can  help to reduce the noice in interiors, or can be used to control the acoustical properties of a concert hall. There are many more of possible applications.  Another issue explored in the production of the gradient scale is the problem of panelization. The Object  is 5.4m long and 1.2m wide. It had to be produced in 3 Segments. Like in a real construction situation,  it had to be considered how the piece is divided into sections, which are put together on site. The MAYA model, and its isoparms, provide a possible approach to the problems solution. Instead of  cutting the piece in straight rectangular pieces, the cuts follow the models isoparms, creating puzzlelike  joints. As the joints follow the MAYA models geometry, their formal appearance matches the entire  projects language.

the Carinthian Architectur Center

The competition brief provided an detailed! history of the Napoleonstadl and
a cataloge of sponsored material, that we were inspired to the following:

As mysthical as the story of Napoleons usage of the "old" House, are the reports of the effects of mobile phone frequences and fields with other medias, like humans.

The proposal for the Exhibtion in the Napoleonstadl focuses on the visualisation of the mobile field effects through a pysical body. Similar to a castle, on which the marks of battle can still be seen although the force that created them has long fanished, the deformation of this body materialises the interaction with the unrecognisable fields sourrounding us every day.

The installation inverts the spacial and temporal condition of the existing building, with the 1830 building filled with an 20th century steel interior.

By representing the raptured virtual body through stripes of anti-mobile frequence net on the outside and an complete art-nouvo stucco profile wrap on the interior forming an unique exhibition space and bar.
